Granville T. Woods: You Belong Wherever Ideas Shape the Future

Granville T. Woods was born in Columbus, Ohio, and left formal schooling at age ten to apprentice as a machinist and blacksmith, teaching himself the rest through night classes and relentless reading. He worked a striking range of jobs — railroad fireman, engineer, rolling-mill worker, ship's engineer — before settling into a career built almost entirely on self-taught electrical engineering.
His most consequential invention closed a dangerous gap: moving trains had no way to communicate with stations or with each other. Woods's induction telegraph system, patented in 1887, used static electricity from the telegraph lines already running beside the tracks to pass messages between moving trains and rail stations — dramatically cutting the risk of collisions.
What he left behind
- Patented an induction telegraph system in 1887, enabling communication between moving trains and rail stations
- Developed "telegraphony," a device combining telephone and telegraph functions, later purchased by Alexander Graham Bell's American Bell Telephone Company
- Held roughly 60 U.S. patents over his career, most related to railway electrical systems
- Devised a grooved wheel, the "troller," used in early electric streetcar systems
Train collisions were a major public concern in the late 19th century. Woods's communication systems let dispatchers and engineers track train locations, making rail travel measurably safer.
